Flea treatment in London

Most London flea jobs involve the cat flea: over 90% of fleas on UK cats and dogs are this species, and the RSPCA estimates that 95% of flea eggs, larvae and pupae live in the home, not on the pet. A female lays up to 50 eggs a day, so killing adults alone is not enough.

The professional standard is a residual insecticide, usually a pyrethroid, with an insect growth regulator: adults die on treated surfaces, and the growth regulator sterilises eggs and stops larvae developing deep in the carpet fibre. It is professional-use only, applied to the HSE-authorised label.

ULV fogging adds a mist under fitted units; what people call flea fumigation is in practice this spray or fog. Whole-room heat reaches pupae but costs more. We use residual plus growth regulator over two visits because it keeps protecting the carpet while pupae hatch; bites on the upper body point to bed bug treatment instead.

Price follows floor area, because a residual is applied by the square metre; severity sets the label rate and how slowly we work. Two visits are the professional norm, a few properties need a third, and a void flat that must be dry before a tenancy starts adds a deadline.

For comparison, Lewisham charges £150 from 1 April 2026 for one visit plus a free re-treatment if required. Wandsworth charges from 1 April 2026 run from £133.23 for a one-bedroom home to £285.49 for five bedrooms, for a single treatment. Hounslow charges £165 for one visit covering up to two bedrooms from 1 April 2026, and Hammersmith and Fulham £156 for one visit and three rooms.

Preparation is part of the treatment. Before we arrive:

• Vacuum every carpet, rug, sofa, skirting edge and pet sleeping spot, and bin the contents outside
• Wash pet bedding and throws on a hot cycle
• Treat every cat and dog with a vet-approved product on the day, and worm them, as larvae can carry tapeworm eggs
• Clear the floors and pull furniture away from the walls

After the visit:

• Stay out, with pets, until the spray is dry; the label sets the time, usually a few hours, and we confirm it before leaving
• Do not wash, shampoo or steam treated floors between visits, because that strips the residual
• Vacuum daily once dry: vibration and warmth trigger pupae to emerge onto treated carpet, where they die
• Expect a few fleas for one to two weeks, then a sharp fall; if they persist a week after the second visit, call 020 3411 2329 and we return under the written six-month guarantee, subject to the site survey

In a rented home the cause decides who pays. Shelter's guidance, updated 1 May 2026, says a landlord must deal with pests that were there at move-in or that a repair they must fix lets in, and must keep the home fit to live in throughout the tenancy; a tenant is responsible only where their own conduct encouraged the pests, and Shelter's example is not flea-treating pets.

Under the Housing Act 2004 an infestation is scored with the Housing Health and Safety Rating System, which since June 2026 files pests under domestic hygiene. Awaab's Law already makes social landlords fix damp and mould to a deadline, is due to reach the remaining hazards, including pests, in 2027, and a GOV.UK consultation open until 18 December 2026 proposes extending it to private tenancies.

Flea calls follow pets and tenancy churn. Across central, west, north-west, north and south-west London and the TW postcodes, the busiest flea work is in carpeted Victorian conversions let to pet owners in Clapham, Balham, Tooting and Streatham, where a flat changes hands every year or two and pupae wait in the carpet for the next tenant. Mansion blocks and studio lets in Kensington, Earl's Court and Pimlico produce a steady run of fleas in house no pets calls, usually traced to a previous occupant's animal. Dog households with carpeted stairs in Willesden, Cricklewood and Kilburn are the hardest to cover with a shop spray, and out west the flats and semis of Hounslow, Isleworth and Richmond sit in boroughs that either charge for fleas or have no service.
