What Lambeth Council does about pests in Brixton
Lambeth still runs a paid pest service for private homes, and Brixton residents book it directly. These were the charges on its price list when we checked in October 2026:
- Lambeth charges £189.60 for rats or mice, covering two visits and collection of the bait boxes, with £81.60 for each extra visit.
- Bed bugs cost £260.40 from Lambeth for sprays in up to two rooms, plus £108 for every additional room.
- A survey-and-advice visit costs £63.60 from the council, and the same sum is charged for a missed or cancelled appointment.
Council tenants on Lambeth's Brixton estates have a separate estates pest service, so ask your housing office whether there is a charge before paying anyone. For everyone else the difference is speed: Lambeth publishes no standard waiting time, and its only faster option is a premium next-day visit at £278.40. Yes. A Brixton Buzz photo report dated 28 July 2026 showed large groups of rats around Loughborough Junction, including at the local Tesco. If you live nearby, check for dark droppings up to about 12mm long and tapered at both ends, and for burrows where paving or a drain cover ends.
I rent a council flat on a Brixton estate: who deals with pests?+
Start with Lambeth, which runs a separate estates pest service for council tenants, and ask your housing office whether you will be charged. Private tenants in Brixton's converted houses should tell their landlord in writing first, because pests that get in through disrepair are usually the landlord's responsibility.
How should I prepare a Brixton flat for bed bug treatment?+
Lambeth's own checklist is a sound guide: pull beds and furniture away from the walls, empty drawers and wardrobes, and hot wash bedding and clothes at 60°C or more, or seal them in thick bin liners. Carry nothing out of the treated rooms except washing and rubbish, or the insects travel with it.
