Rodent control in London

Pest Stop Control provides rodent control in London for homes, landlords and businesses, covering both rats and mice. A technician first confirms which rodent you have, because the two need different handling, then traces how they get in, treats with traps or secured bait and seals the gaps. Visits are often same day, Monday to Saturday 8am to 7pm, with a written six-month guarantee, subject to the site survey.

In short

How rodents treatment works

Rodent control in London means two species: the brown rat and the house mouse, since the black rat has all but vanished from Britain. Telling them apart comes first. Westminster City Council's leaflets put rat droppings at up to 12mm and tapered, mouse droppings at 3 to 6mm, and note that mice fit through cracks of 5mm. Rats are wary of anything new while mice investigate it, so traps and bait go in differently. Westminster says most infestations take four to eight weeks to control.

Every treatment carries a written six-month guarantee, subject to the site survey. If the treated pest returns inside the six months, we come back and re-treat at no charge.

Signs to look for

Do you have a problem?

  • Droppings: 3 to 6mm and rod-shaped for mice, up to 12mm and tapered for rats
  • Gnawed cables, skirting, food packaging and bin lids
  • Greasy dark smears along skirting and pipes where fur brushes the same route
  • Scratching in the loft or wall cavity, mostly at night
  • Holes of 20 to 30mm by the skirting for mice, burrows beside paving and drain covers for rats
  • Shredded paper or insulation gathered into a nest under the floor or in the loft

Our process

What a visit involves

01

Identify the rodent

Droppings, gnaw marks, hole size and where the activity is tell us whether it is rats, mice or both.

02

Trace the way in

We check drains, air bricks, pipe entries, door gaps and the roofline, and record every entry point.

03

Plan in writing

Visits, treatment, proofing and guarantee terms, at a fixed price, before we start.

04

Treat the runs

Break-back traps or tamper-resistant bait stations, with professional-use rodenticide applied to the CRRU UK code and the HSE-authorised label.

05

Seal and follow up

Entry points are sealed, then follow-up visits collect the bait and confirm the job is finished.

Rats or mice: how rodent control methods differ

The method depends on the rodent, so the first visit is about identification. Westminster City Council's leaflets say brown rats live in lofts, wall cavities, garden burrows and sewers, while mice nest inside houses, under floors and in lofts, especially in winter.

  • Trapping: break-back traps on the runs. Mice investigate new objects, so traps tend to work quickly; rats avoid anything unfamiliar at first, so traps are checked over several visits.
  • Baiting: tamper-resistant stations with professional-use rodenticide applied to the CRRU UK code. Since 1 January 2025 second-generation anticoagulants cannot be used against rodents not linked to a building, which restricts baiting open ground.
  • Proofing: because a mouse fits through a 5mm crack, proofing for mice is close work around pipes and kitchen units; for rats it centres on drains, air bricks and the base of walls.

Most jobs combine all three. Glue boards are not part of it: since 31 July 2024 setting a glue trap for rodents in England is an offence without a licence. More detail on each: rat control and mice control.

What affects the cost of rodent control, and what London councils charge

The price depends on which rodent it is, how far it has spread, how many rooms are involved, whether the drains play a part and how much proofing is needed. Businesses also need written visit records for the environmental health officer.

Councils in our area now mostly charge, and their price covers treatment, not proofing:

  • Hounslow Council, from 1 April 2026: £180 for rats indoors or for mice, up to three visits
  • Wandsworth Council, from 1 April 2026: £214 for rats and mice, or £107 at the concession rate
  • Kensington and Chelsea Council, updated July 2026: £258.80 for four visits covering up to five rooms

Westminster City Council's page, updated May 2026, says it is not taking on further private or commercial work, and Richmond Council offers no pest control service. We start with a free inspection survey, then a fixed written quote with no call-out fee.

Preparing for the visit and what happens after

Before the visit:

  • Clear access to the loft hatch, the cupboard under the sink, kitchen kickboards and anywhere you have seen droppings
  • Put food in sealed containers and keep bins shut, so the traps and bait are the easiest meal in the house
  • Take up any glue boards you have set; Hounslow Council tells residents it cannot lawfully use them in homes
  • Tell us about pets and young children, so stations go where they cannot be reached

After the visit:

  • Leave traps and bait stations where they are, and keep pets away from them
  • Expect activity to tail off over the following weeks rather than stop overnight
  • Wear gloves to deal with any dead rodent or droppings and wash your hands afterwards, as the NHS advises

If fresh droppings appear after the final visit, call us: the written six-month guarantee, subject to the site survey, covers a return visit.

Who is responsible for rodents: the law on rats and mice

Under the Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949, councils must keep their districts free of rats and mice so far as practicable. Occupiers are expected to report them in substantial numbers to the council in writing, and a council that finds a problem can require the owner or occupier to deal with it, by treatment or by building repairs. The Act deals with rats and mice; in everyday speech they are vermin, so vermin control and rodent control describe the same service.

In a rented home, pests are one of the 29 hazards a property is judged on under the Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Act 2018. Broadly, the landlord deals with rodents that get in through disrepair or were there when the tenancy began; a tenant whose own waste caused the problem deals with it. See is my landlord responsible for pest control.

Food businesses have their own duty to keep pests out under the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013; see commercial pest control.

Where in London we treat rats and mice

We cover central, west, north-west, north and south-west London and the TW postcodes. Mice tend to be the commoner call in mansion blocks, conversions and terraces, where they move between flats through shared voids and service ducts, as in Kensington and Pimlico. Rats are more often a garden or drains problem in houses with older drainage, in places such as Wandsworth and Chiswick.

Freedom of information data reported by the Evening Standard put Camden at 9,133 rat reports between 2023 and mid-2025, Brent at 6,523 and Kensington and Chelsea at 5,740. Same-day visits are often possible, Monday to Saturday 8am to 7pm, with Sunday kept for emergency calls. See all the areas we cover.

I highly recommend this pest control company! The technician was professional, thorough, and extremely knowledgeable. The treatment process was outstanding from start to finish. He first carefully vacuumed the entire area, then steam-treated every part of the company, including all the furniture and bed frames, before applying the bed bug treatment. The attention to detail was exceptional, and nothing was overlooked. We've used other pest control companies before, but this was by far the most comprehensive and effective service I've experienced. If you're looking for a reliable, professional, and effective bed bug treatment service, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

Their technicians were very professional, knowledgeable, and explained the bed bugs treatment clearly. The bed bugs treatment was carried out quickly and effectively, and the problem was resolved in no time. We are very happy with the service and highly recommend Pest Stop to anyone dealing with a bed bugs problem or needing professional bed bugs treatment.

Rodents FAQ

What customers ask before booking

What is rodent control?+

Rodent control is the treatment and prevention of rats and mice in a building or garden: working out which rodent you have, removing them with traps or secured bait, sealing the gaps they use and checking over follow-up visits that the job is finished.

Is vermin control the same as rodent control?+

In practice, yes. Vermin is the everyday word for rats and mice, so a vermin control, rodent control or rat and mouse control service is the same job. Some firms also put squirrels or pigeons under vermin; we treat rats and mice, and each insect we treat has its own service page.

Do I need a rat exterminator or a mouse exterminator?+

The same technician handles both. Exterminator is the American word; in the UK the trade is pest control. What changes is the method: rats need slower, more careful trap and bait placement because they avoid new objects, while mice usually take to traps quickly, so the plan is built around the rodent you have.

How much does rodent control cost in London?+

It depends on whether it is rats or mice, how many rooms are affected, whether the drains are involved and how much proofing is needed. We carry out a free inspection survey and then give a fixed written quote, with no call-out fee.

How long does rodent control take?+

Westminster City Council says most rat and mouse infestations take four to eight weeks to control. Most programmes run to two or three visits: the first to treat, the next to check and top up, and a last one to collect the bait and confirm activity has stopped.

Is it rats or mice in my loft?+

Droppings settle it: up to 12mm and tapered for rats, 3 to 6mm for mice. An adult brown rat weighs 200 to 300g against a mouse's 11 to 30g, so rats sound heavier overhead. Westminster City Council lists lofts as a nesting place for both, so a survey confirms which before any treatment.

Can I use rat poison from a shop?+

Amateur products come in limited pack sizes and strengths, and University of Huddersfield research found rodenticide resistance widespread in parts of southern England. Poison laid in the open also reaches wildlife such as barn owls. Sealing the way in usually matters more than more bait.

Are rats and mice a health risk?+

They can be. Rodent urine can carry leptospirosis, which the NHS says spreads when infected urine gets into the mouth, eyes or a cut. It is uncommon, with 115 cases in England in 2025 according to UKHSA. Wear gloves when cleaning up droppings, cover any cuts and wash your hands afterwards.

Why do rodents come indoors in autumn?+

Falling temperatures send them towards warmth and food. Westminster City Council notes that mice often nest inside houses in winter, and the National Pest Technicians Association's 2025 autumn survey found rat activity up 38% nationally. Autumn is the time to seal gaps.

Do you deal with rodents in businesses?+

Yes. Restaurants, shops, offices, hotels and warehouses get the same survey, plus bait station plans, visit reports and proofing records for the environmental health officer. Most move onto a scheduled contract once the infestation is cleared.
