Local knowledge

Pests and properties in Tooting

Much of Tooting was built in two waves. Totterdown Fields, put up between 1901 and 1911, was the first London County Council cottage estate, with 1,244 houses over 38 acres, and a second growth spurt in the 1920s and 1930s filled in many of the surrounding streets. Houses of those decades often have suspended timber floors and connected voids, which give mice room to nest and travel. Food is the other factor: Broadway Market has more than ninety stalls and has traded since 1936, and a second indoor market stands on the same High Street, so there is a steady supply of waste for rodents to find. Bed bugs arrive with people, and plenty of people pass through Tooting.

Wandsworth Council and Merton: pest control options in Tooting

Tooting is in Wandsworth, which treats private homes for a fee and charges for every pest. The Colliers Wood side is different: Merton Council says it does not offer a pest control service for private properties, so homeowners there have to use a private firm.

  • Wandsworth's charge for rats or mice, from 1 April 2026, is £214 for two visits and bait-box collection, or £107 on the concession.
  • Bed bugs cost from £237.91 with Wandsworth for a one-bedroom home, rising by bedroom to £428.24 for five, over two treatments.
  • Businesses, including market stalls and kitchens, need a separate commercial quote from the council.

The concession is for Access for All members and people on means-tested benefits; if that includes you, the council is the cheaper booking. If you live on the Merton side, or a stall or kitchen cannot wait for a council slot, a private service is the practical route. Fees and booking details are on Wandsworth Council's pest control page, and our council pest control guide for London covers Merton as well.

Why Tooting gets bed bugs, mice and rats

Bed bugs first. One national pest control firm's call-out map for the 12 months to October 2026 recorded 32 bed bug call-outs in SW17, which put Tooting among the busier districts in London. The firm links its hotspots to dense flats and shared housing, a fast-moving rental market and heavy commuter and visitor traffic. For the treatment itself, see our bed bug treatment page.

Mice and rats follow food. The High Street's two indoor markets, together with the kitchens and bins that serve them, give rodents a reliable supply, and mice that get into one building can move along to the next through shared voids. Rats work the bins and back gardens, especially where bags are left out overnight. Read how we approach mouse control in homes and small businesses.

Tooting FAQ

Pest control in Tooting: common questions

Is Tooting really a bed bug hotspot?+

On one national pest control firm's call-out map for the year to October 2026, SW17 had 32 bed bug call-outs, among the higher counts in London. Those are jobs attended rather than confirmed infestations, so read the figure as a sign of activity, not a measure of risk to any one home.

Does Merton Council treat pests on the Colliers Wood side of Tooting?+

No. Merton says it does not offer a pest control service for private properties and directs homeowners to private firms, although it can serve abatement notices on commercial premises. Streets on the Wandsworth side of Tooting can book Wandsworth's paid service instead.

Can I use glue traps for mice in my Tooting home?+

No. Since 31 July 2024 it has been an offence in England to set a glue trap to catch a rodent without a licence, and a licence may be granted to a pest controller only to preserve public health or public safety. A professional programme relies on bait stations and other lawful methods instead.

Should I throw out a bed that has bed bugs?+

Usually not. Carrying an infested mattress through a building can spread the insects on the way out, and a new bed brought in before treatment ends can be reinfested. Lambeth Council advises against buying a new bed until the infestation is fully cleared, which usually takes at least two weeks.
