Electronic fly killers in London: supply, installation and servicing

We supply, install and service electronic fly killers for restaurants, bakeries, food shops, hotels, bars, warehouses, clinics and schools, sited to the rules EHOs check and serviced to a schedule, with lamp changes and catch counts logged for your file. Survey visits are often same day, Monday to Saturday, with a written six-month guarantee, subject to the site survey.

In short

How electronic fly killers treatment works

An electronic fly killer uses ultraviolet lamps to draw flying insects already indoors away from food and on to an adhesive glue board, or an electrified grid with a catch tray beneath. The lamps' pull fades before they look dim, so they are changed on the schedule the manufacturer specifies; boards are changed when full or at each service. Units go away from windows and doors, never above a food preparation surface and never visible from outside.

Every treatment carries a written six-month guarantee, subject to the site survey. If the treated pest returns inside the six months, we come back and re-treat at no charge.

Signs to look for

Do you have a problem?

  • A fly killer visible from the street, which Bromley Council says draws flies in
  • A unit above a food preparation surface, which officers record as a contravention
  • A tray or glue board crowded with dead insects, the detail in the 2016 Leeds prosecution
  • Lamps unchanged this season; the pull fades before the brightness does
  • Flies in the kitchen with the unit on: an open door or a breeding source
  • No catch record, lamp log or numbered plan when the EHO asks

Our process

What a visit involves

01

Survey

Where food is prepared, stored and served, where doors and windows let flies in, where light and power sit.

02

Specify

Glue board units where food is handled, grid units in service areas, all on a numbered plan.

03

Install

Mounted at the agreed height, wired to the agreed supply, switched on and numbered to the plan.

04

Service

Trays emptied, boards changed, lamps replaced on the manufacturer's schedule, the unit checked, every visit.

05

Record

Catch counted and identified, lamp changes logged, report filed for the EHO folder.

Methods compared: glue board units, grid units, screens and proofing

All units use ultraviolet lamps to draw in flying insects; they differ in what happens next.

  • Glue board units: the insect lands on an adhesive board behind the lamps and stays there. Quiet and enclosed, so these go in kitchens, preparation rooms and wherever customers see the wall; the board is also the catch record
  • Grid units: the insect hits an electrified grid and drops into a tray. Fragments can scatter and the grid crackles, so we keep them for bin stores, loading bays and warehouses, away from open food
  • Screens and proofing: cleanable mesh over opening windows, plastic strips or chain curtains on doors left open for air; a unit only deals with what the screens miss

The board inside the unit is not a floor glue trap for rodents, which we do not use. Breeding sources are treated under fly control; a lamp does not stop flies breeding beneath it.

What affects the cost of fly killer supply and servicing

What moves the quote:

  • Units: one glue board unit may cover a restaurant kitchen; a hotel with kitchen, pastry, bar and bin store needs several
  • Mounting: ceiling suspension takes longer than a wall bracket
  • Electrics: a new point, where no socket or fused spur is within reach, is arranged and priced separately
  • Service frequency: a food production site on the six-weekly visits a BRCGS audit typically expects costs more to run than a shop on a lighter schedule
  • Documentation: numbered plan, catch records and lamp logs come with every contract; BRCGS trend analysis adds time

No council charge exists to compare: Kensington and Chelsea's list (updated 9 July 2026) and Hounslow's (from 1 April 2026) cover home treatments, not flies. The survey is free, the quote fixed in writing, and there is no call-out fee.

Preparing for the installation visit and what happens after

Before we install:

  • The survey first: where food is prepared, stored and served, which doors and windows open in service, where daylight falls, where power is
  • Positions: by the preparation room entrance, never over the bench, hidden from the street, out of direct sunlight, not facing an external door, near a socket or fused spur
  • Tell us your trading pattern: we fit before, between or after services, Monday to Saturday

After installation:

  • Leave every unit on day and night; never move, open or switch one off; call us if a board or tray fills
  • Doors shut or screened, bins lidded and outside, waste out at close: Bromley Council's guidance says never leave waste inside overnight or use fly sprays near food
  • The first service sets the baseline catch; a rising count later means flies are getting in or breeding, and we trace the source under the six-month guarantee, subject to survey

Who is responsible for fly control, and the law for food businesses

The food business operator carries the duty, not the contractor. Annex II of retained Regulation (EC) 852/2004 requires adequate procedures to control pests in food premises, enforced under the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013; it requires control you can show, not a contractor.

An EHO checks screens on open doors and windows, where each fly killer hangs, when food waste goes out and whether outside bins have lids. A unit above a food preparation surface is a finding; a Norwich City Council inspection report logged one over food handling as a contravention. Pest control sits in the physical condition element of the food hygiene rating, and a 5 needs no element above 5, so it alone can cap it.

The file: a plan with every unit numbered, each visit's report, catch counts per unit, lamp change dates. In 2016 Leeds City Council prosecuted a shop where officers found flies, a fly killer with hundreds of dead insects in its tray and no documented pest controller: a £1,500 fine, £2,500 costs and a £120 surcharge.

Where in London we install and service fly killers

Most fly killer work is in the West End: basement kitchens and bars in Soho, and hotel kitchens and pastry sections in Mayfair and Westminster. Camden's market stalls and bakeries take glue board units customers can stand beside, plus a grid unit for the bin store. West along the river, the cafes, butchers and grocers of Hammersmith and Chiswick are shop-front sites, where the unit must not be seen from the pavement. In Hounslow and the TW postcodes the jobs get bigger: production units and warehouses near Heathrow, grid units over the loading bays, glue board units in the packing rooms. The same survey, plan and records apply across central, west, north-west, north and south-west London under our commercial pest control contracts.

I had been struggling with a serious cockroach infestation that quickly got out of control, and it was becoming a major hygiene and health concern. After searching for a reliable and top-rated pest control company, I decided to contact Pest Stop Limited—and it turned out to be an excellent decision. From the initial inspection, their team showed a high level of professionalism and expertise. They carried out a detailed assessment of the property, identified the root cause of the infestation, and implemented a well-structured treatment plan using advanced residual insecticide solutions specifically designed for cockroach control. A special thanks to their technician, Mohammad, who was extremely polite, knowledgeable, and clearly an expert in his field. He took the time to explain the entire process, including cockroach behaviour, breeding cycles, and how their treatment targets both visible and hidden infestations. His advice on preparation, cleanliness, and prevention worked perfectly and made a noticeable difference throughout the treatment process. The treatments were carried out over multiple visits to ensure complete eradication, using industry-grade products that are both highly effective and safe. Their residual treatment created a long-lasting barrier, preventing re-infestation and ensuring the problem was dealt with at its source. The results have been outstanding—no more sightings, no more concerns. The infestation has been completely eradicated, and the peace of mind this has brought is invaluable. Electronic Fly Killers FAQ

What customers ask before booking

Where should an electric fly killer be positioned?+

Between the way in and the food, never over it: near the preparation room entrance, hidden from the street, out of direct sunlight and not facing an external door. Bromley Council's rule: never above a surface where food is prepared.

How often should fly killer tubes or lamps be changed?+

On the schedule the manufacturer specifies, where Bromley Council's guidance points businesses. Lamps lose their pull on flies well before they look dim, so a glowing tube is not proof it works. Each change is logged against the unit number.

Do electric fly killers work?+

Yes, on the flies already inside: the ultraviolet lamps draw them off the food and on to a board or grid. They cannot compete with an open door or replace work on the breeding source, so siting and screens decide the result.

Are fly zappers allowed in kitchens?+

No rule names zappers; the rules are about where any unit hangs. A grid can scatter insect fragments, so a zapper near open food is a finding; we fit enclosed glue board units in kitchens and keep grid units for service areas.

Glue board or zapper, which is better?+

Glue board where food is handled or customers look: quiet, enclosed, nothing thrown out, and the board doubles as the catch record. Grid units suit bin stores, loading bays and warehouses, where numbers are higher and nothing lies open underneath.

How many fly killers does a restaurant need?+

One for each place flies arrive or food is exposed, placed so the lamps cover the route in. A small kitchen with one entrance may need a single unit; a restaurant with kitchen, pass, bar and bin store needs one at each.

Can you install fly killers in a shop front?+

Yes, as long as it cannot be seen from outside: Bromley Council's guidance is that a visible fly killer attracts flies in. We mount it on a return wall or behind the counter, lamps facing into the shop, not the pavement.

What does an EHO check about fly control?+

Screens on open doors and windows, when food waste goes out, lids on outside bins, where each fly killer hangs, and the file: plan, visit reports, catch counts and lamp changes, all scored under the physical condition of the premises.

Do you service fly killer units we already own?+

Yes. We check the unit is sound, re-site it if it hangs over food or faces the street, put it on our schedule: lamps on the manufacturer's interval, boards or trays each visit. A unit past repair is quoted for replacement.

Do fly killers attract more flies?+

Only when sited wrongly. A unit visible from outside, or hung by a door or window, draws flies in from the street, the point of Bromley Council's rule. Sited inside and away from openings, it attracts the flies already in the building.

How much does an electronic fly killer cost?+

How many units the survey counts, whether they are glue board or grid, the electrics, how many service visits a year your contract or audit standard needs, and the records you need. The survey is free and the quote fixed in writing.

Is there a guarantee on fly killer installation?+

Two layers. The units carry the manufacturer's warranty. The programme around them, siting, servicing and source work, carries our written six-month guarantee, subject to the site survey: if flies continue, we come back, trace the source and put it right.
